Can Literature Save the Environment?

As two freshman at Skidmore College, we have spent the past semester examining the question, "can literature save the environment?" We've read John Muir, Rachel Carson (Silent Spring), Edward Abbey (The Monkey Wrench Gang), and Dr. Suess (The Lorax), among others in an attempt to discover the possibilities that exist for saving the environment.

As our final project, we interviewed Jeff Olson, a Saratoga local who works for Alta Planning and Design in the development of environmentally conscious or "green" trails, cities, and methods of transportation. Having worked at Alta for eight years, Jeff has been instrumental in establishing projects that seek to create a safe, eco-friendly community within cities and towns across the United States. Throughout our interview, we touched upon what forms of literature have most influenced him, what he believes is the most effective method for saving the environment, and a business trip to Australia in which he went snorkelling at 4 a.m, all in the hopes of furthering our understanding and broadening our perspectives of the role literature takes in saving the environment.

This project is the culmination of our studies but not necessarily a definitive answer to that question.
