The environment is where we all meet; where all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.

 - Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson

Dr. Springarn cited Lady Bird Johnson, the wife of former US President Lydon B Johnson, as
an influence on his environmental ethic, and quoted her as saying that in terms of the environment, "every little bit hurts." While we could not verify that Lady Bird Johnson actually said this, she did say many things, including the above sentiment, about the environment and preserving it. Her arguments centered around preserving the environment for the next generation as well as nature as a kind of art that is necessary for humans to experience, similar to the sentiments of John Muir. Many of Johnson's quotes center around her love and fascination with wildflowers, and while this, like Dr. Spingarn's desire to illiminate litter, may seem insignificant and superficial, both sentiments were and are doubtless heartfelf.
