Can Literature save the environment? It is the title and central question of our first-year Scribner Seminar at Skidmore college (you can find a link to our class’s specific website here). But before we answer this question, we must first define what we mean by Literature. Today, technological literacy is nearly as important as literacy of the written word. Literature includes a broad collection of media; from books to movies, and from GIFs to print papers—the story of our environment is being told in ways it never has been before alongside the old guard of written communication. We’ve read a few of what might be called the classics of environmental literature: selections from John Muir, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang, and even Dr. Suess’s The Lorax—all with the courses titular question in mind. The course culminates in a final project that requires us to head out into the world and ask real people in the Saratoga community the question that we have spent the semester pondering ourselves, “Can Literature Save The Environment?”
