After seeing each group's project we were able to draw parallels between each of these various kinds of environmentalists. The presentations included interviews with Jeff Olson of Alta Planning and Design, Saratoga County Supervisor Joanne Yepson, Karen Totino of Green Conscience: Home and Garden, Suzanne Carreker-Voigt of Saratoga Farmer's Market, and local Rabbi Linda Motzkin. We found that each interviewee had previously held many various careers and had gotten to the place they were in life now through an interesting path. We also got a general vibe that they had each been inspired and motivated by their children; for some it was a means for supporting a family, while others were worried about creating a better world for future generations. There also was a general trend of community-based, public work among these environmentalists, as well as a clear example of women in strong leadership positions. Many people did also display an interest in the work of Bill McKibben, along with other authors. However, it is perhaps most telling that no one said directly yes, literature definitely can save environment. This displays how the environment needs varied efforts, happening on all fronts, in order to have an impact and be "saved." Overall, these parallels illuminate the fact that there is not one direct path toward changing or saving the environment. We all come from different backgrounds and so we are all motivated through different means toward change.
