About Us

We are students in the class "Can Literature Save the Environment?" at Skidmore College and here's a bit about each one of us

Sukie Emerson

Class of 2016

(An old tree in Colorado, 2010)

Hi, I'm Sukie Emerson and I am a current first year student at Skidmore College. I am taking Can Literature Save the Environment as my freshman seminar. I did not get the chance to take an environmental studies class in high school, and therefore, I chose to take this seminar to step foot into Environmental Studies at Skidmore. Although in high school I studied a few literary pieces about nature, it is interesting not only focusing on how literature can sway opinions, but also to discover how nature is perceived differently from person to person. Whether it's going for a walk in the woods, playing a sport, or just sitting outside I find it's rewarding to take a moment and stop and try to soak up nature as best I can.

Maddy Morency

Class of 2016

(Mayan Ruin in Belize, 2012)

Hi, I’m Maddy Morency and I am currently a freshman at Skidmore College in the class of 2016. I am originally from Los Angeles, California. I went to Harvard Westlake high school in Studio City. Coming from a big city, I think that it is especially important to learn the different ways to help the environment in a well developed city. Many people think that they don’t have time or their efforts would be insignificant, but I believe that different forms of literature can inspire people to take action. I am currently in a freshman seminar entitled “Can Literature Save the Environment?” with Professor Michael Marx. Based on our readings from John Muir, Rachel Carson, and Edward Abbey I definitely believe that literature has the potential to save the environment.

Gabriel Saul Cohn is a freshman at Skidmore College in the class of 2016.  He started his schooling career at Egbert W. Beach Elementary School in Piedmont, CA, going through Piedmont Middle School and one year at Piedmont High School before spending the final three years of his K-12 education at Hamden Hall Country Day School in Hamden, CT.  His current hometown is New Haven, CT, but he still considers himself a Norcal man at heart.  Gabe's academic intersts include Writing (especially journalism), Reading, Music, Environmental Science, and Theater.  His hobbies include playing guitar, singing, listening to music, record collecting, cooking, and reading.  His interest in writing can be linked to his parents, who are both journalists, while his interest in the environment can be linked to the extensive amount of time he's spent in the Sierras at Shaffer's High Sierra Camp.  He looks forward to learning more about environmental writing.
