During the interview we specifically asked the question: Do you think Literature Can Save the Environment?

Her response was that she was inspired by Bill McKibben's work, and she told us a story from one of Bill McKibben's early works where a food cooperative emerged, and a  corporation was attempting to take over the midwest, eventually farms were being taken over by corporate farms. In the book, one farmer wouldn’t let the banks/corporations take the farm- in Lincoln, Nebraska- by buying an old warehouse they saved their farms by growing food and selling fresh products and value added product directly to consumers (See our Bill McKibben tab for more information)

  • She read it in the 90's before she started coordinating the farmers market
  • There is a worry that the trust instilled in farmers markets will leave if any evidence products sold are not as represented (resale and not vendor produced) without trust, consumers won't accept the product and won't come back. An example is of how one "bad egg" can spoil it for all.
The fact that literature can make such a lasting impression on someone who ended up working in an extrememly environemntally-friendly field lends creedance to the idea that literature, by raising awareness, can indeed contribute to saving the environment.
